Thank you for joining us at the Faulkner County Library Saturday, February 1st from 1-4 pm for our New Year celebration! Conway High School’s Asian Club and the CALC hosted a joint event to celebrate the Year of the Snake.




UCA New Year Celebration 1/31

Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year, is one of the world’s most prominent and celebrated holidays. Celebrated by more than 20% of the world population, it is the most important annual event for many countries in Asia. This year is the Year of the Snake and it starts on January 29th, 2025. The snake in Chinese culture is a symbol of wisdom, calmness, renewal, and creativity.
The Center for Asian Languages and Cultures at UCA hosted celebration on January 31st, two days after Chinese New Year, with music performance, art, and Chinese food. Over 150 members of UCA and the local Asian community in Conway attended.

CALC Public Lecture: Qi, Yin and Yang: Chinese Medicine for Diabetes, Obesity, and Dementia

Dr. Yibei Li holds a Ph.D. and M.D. in Internal Medicine from Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CDUTCM), where they have been deeply involved in both clinical practice and academic pursuits. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Li has cultivated a distinguished career that bridges Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western medical research. His expertise spans across diabetes, metabolic disorders, and public health initiatives, having led and contributed to multiple research projects aimed at improving diabetes treatment and prevention.

March 3rd-5th, 2023: Language Immersion Camp
The Center for Asian Languages and Cultures held a Chinese Immersion Program for college students successfully in Mount Eagle Retreat Center. Around twenty students from UCA and Hendrix College attended. They enjoyed a good time speaking Chinese, watching Chinese movies, Karaokein Chinese, and Chinese calligraphy. UCA professors Jia Zhu, Guo-ou Zhuang and Professor Wenjia Liu from Hendrix led the activities.
October 16, 2022: CALC hosts the HSK Exam


The UCA Center for Asian Languages and Cultures (CALC) recently organized a language testing opportunity for high school students from Arkansas and other neighboring states. The HSK Chinese Language Proficiency Test assesses proficiency in Mandarin Chinese for foreign students seeking to study in China or simply to measure their language proficiency against an internationally recognized standard. Dr. Guo ou Zhuang, Associate Professor of Chinese in the Department of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures, and Cultures and Director of the UCA CALC welcomed 71 students to Irby Hall 209 and 213 on Sunday, October 16, 2022. HSK Level II, and IV tests were offered in the morning and HSK III test were offered in the afternoon. Attending students arrived from Conway High School, Springdale High School, Bentonville High School, and Pulaski Academy, as well as from Tennessee. The Center for Asian Languages and Cultures promotes student access to Chinese language and culture through the auspices of UCA’s Center for Global Learning and Engagement.
