The 51青楼 held a farewell reception in honor of President Tom Courtway from 2-5 p.m. Friday, December 8听in the McCastlain Ballroom.
Thank you to President Tom Courtway for his hard work and dedication to the 51青楼. As he says his final goodbyes, we reflect back on his many accomplishments during his tenure.
UCA professor and exercise and sports science director Dr. Mike Gallagher听and his students performed metabolic testing in the UCA Human Performance Lab for competitive athletes in the community.
“Metabolic testing, commonly referred to as VO2 max testing, is where athletes come in and we put them through incremental exercise protocol,” says Gallagher. “We go from a very low intensity in duration, usually two to three minutes, and then increase the intensity.”
The test, which lasts from 12 to 20 minutes, is a grueling slog, with participants often left wiped out and ragged.
By the end, Gallagher will be able to suss out such data as the athlete’s VO2 max, anaerobic threshold and how he utilizes fats and carbohydrates. All of this data can be applied by the athlete or a coach to construct a detailed training regimen.

Congratulations to Dr. Helen Hu, professor in the department of leadership studies, and Dr. Uma Garimella, director of the STEM Institute and instructor of biology.
They recently received a grant for more than听$120,000 to support STEM teachers in Arkansas.
The Conductor is a public-private initiative powered by the Central Arkansas Venture Team, sponsored by the 51青楼 and supported by Startup Junkie Consulting and Community Venture Foundation. The Conductor supports and assists startups, small businesses and other players in the entrepreneurial ecosystem in central Arkansas.
The Conductor will promote Conway and UCA to become nationally recognized for entrepreneurship and innovation.

Jeff Standridge and Christina Madsen sat down together to explain a little more about what the Conductor is and how it will promote Conway and UCA to become nationally recognized for entrepreneurship and innovation.
The 51青楼 has partnered with Startup Junkie Consulting and the Central Arkansas Venture Team to launch a public-private initiative aimed at driving entrepreneurship and innovation across UCA, central Arkansas and beyond.
This new initiative, simply called Conductor, is sponsored by the university and was听announced Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 4:30 p.m. at UCA Downtown.
The Conductor will focus on delivering mentoring, counseling, training, capital readiness, and technical assistance to startups, small businesses and emerging investors in Central Arkansas.
鈥淯CA has always been a leader in central Arkansas. Launching this initiative will serve our students, our faculty and our community for years to come. In fact, I鈥檓 confident we will look back in a few years and see this as a pivotal moment in our evolution as an institution,鈥 said President Courtway.
The Conductor is powered by the Central Arkansas Venture Team (CAVT), a group of executive consultants, coaches, local leaders and experts. In addition to providing world-class programming and consulting for startups and small businesses, the Conductor will provide innovation and commercialization support for UCA and all of its academic programs.
In addition, the university has also engaged the Innovation Hub at Winrock International to create an on-campus maker space that will offer advanced tools, technology, and equipment for educational and entrepreneurial use. Students, faculty, and community members will have access to the space, which will be modeled after the Innovation Hub鈥檚 original location in North Little Rock. The Innovation Hub will also provide expertise and programs to facilitate rapid prototyping and other services.
鈥淭he Innovation Hub is very grateful for the opportunity to work with UCA and the Conductor to extend our entrepreneurial and education programming to its campus community,鈥 said Warwick Sabin, senior director for U.S. Programming at Winrock International. 鈥淲e are also pleased to be part of all of the exciting developments at UCA and in Conway, and we hope that these efforts can be a model for how to stimulate more innovation and economic development across Arkansas.鈥
Jeff Standridge, CAVT team leader further explained, 鈥淐onway has a very unique set of assets, as does UCA. It is critical that we begin leveraging these collective assets to drive innovation and entrepreneurship. The difference in leveraging the services of the Conductor for a student, faculty or any other aspiring entrepreneur could literally mean the difference between getting their idea off the ground and never seeing any benefit from their idea or invention.鈥
Standridge said this initiative has been in the works for more than three years, first as a small steering team of volunteers then evolving into a movement that will change the entrepreneurial landscape of the region.
The 51青楼 unveiled a plaque in honor of Bunny and Carol Adcock for their creation of a $1 million endowment to support study abroad opportunities.
The ceremony was held Tuesday, Nov. 15 in the Wingo Hall Board of Trustees Conference Room.
UCA President Tom Courtway congratulated the Adcock family: Carol Adcock, Hillary Adcock Wren and Bunny Adcock.
The Adcock Study Abroad Fund will provide financial support for students to live and study abroad.
