Program Description

Ready for the experience of a lifetime? Join fellow 51ÇàÂ¥ Bears on a faculty-led journey across two of Vietnam’s most iconic destinations—earning academic credit and building global perspectives that will set your resume apart.

Destination Highlights:
  • Hanoi: The Historic & Vibrant Capital –ÌýStep into a bustling metropolis where ancient traditions meet dynamic modern life. Walk through the historic Old Quarter, explore the sacred Temple of Literature, and visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. Between classes, dive into world-famous street food like authentic pho and fresh banh mi right by Hoan Kiem Lake, and tour FPT University’s modern campus.
  • Da Nang & Hoi An: Coastal Beauty & Ancient Culture –ÌýBalance your academic journey along South Central Vietnam’s coast. Unwind on pristine beaches, trek through the Marble Mountains, discover Cham history, and explore the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An Ancient Town.

  • Academic & Cultural Workshops: Attend 4 interactive workshops co-hosted by UCA faculty and FPT University lecturers on Vietnamese history, culture, and language.

Dr. Phillip Bailey

Associate Vice President for Global Learning and Engagement

Dr. Bailey is Associate Vice President for Global Learning and Engagement at the 51ÇàÂ¥ and a Professor of French. Fluent in French and conversational in Spanish, he has traveled extensively throughout Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. He looks forward to helping UCA students engage with Vietnamese culture and learn useful Vietnamese expressions during their May 2027 study abroad experience.

Dr. Taine Duncan

Chair, Associate Professor and Director of Gender Studies Program

Dr. Duncan’s research focuses on feminist philosophy, critical theory, and 20th-century Continental philosophy, with interests in autonomy, power, participation, and intersubjectivity. Her current work explores solidarity as political participation, the future of human nature, and the intersections of critical whiteness studies and feminism.

Dr. Zach Smith

Associate Director, Center for Asian Languages & Cultures and Associate Professor of History

Dr. Smith is a cultural historian of modern China and the Chinese diaspora in America, focusing on citizenship and belonging among rural Chinese communities across the Pacific. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and researches Chinese and Asian American history. In 2023, he co-founded the Arkansas Chinese Heritage Project, an online oral history archive documenting the history of Chinese communities in the Arkansas and Mississippi Deltas.
