UCA Public Relations Students Present To Conway High Students /bearblog/2017/07/06/public-relations-students-from-the-university-of-central-arkansas-school-of-communication-presented-to-conway-high-school-students-on-march-31/ /bearblog/2017/07/06/public-relations-students-from-the-university-of-central-arkansas-school-of-communication-presented-to-conway-high-school-students-on-march-31/#respond Thu, 06 Jul 2017 18:58:30 +0000 /bearblog/?p=2332 Public relations students from the University of聽Central Arkansas School of Communication presented to Conway High School students on March 31, 2017.

Treslyn Fletcher, Jordan Reynolds, Shelby Sites, Leia Smith and Julia Woods聽presented to five different classes. Jordan Reynolds and Shelby Sites are members of UCA鈥檚 chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America.

鈥淚 was very excited to get to speak to high school students about public relations,鈥 said Woods.聽鈥淚 didn鈥檛 even know what it was before college, so I鈥檓 glad they鈥檙e hearing about it now.鈥 The presenters informed the students about PR, what PR practitioners do and skills they know,聽how to use social media effectively, and what PRSSA is and how it is beneficial to students. High school students are heavily involved with social media, so the presenters tried to work that into a large portion of their presentations. Students were asked to list reasons why they use social聽media, as well as start thinking about ways that their social media usage could help or harm their聽chances of getting a summer job or even a future career.

The Conway High students came from classes such as entrepreneurship, accounting, imaging and聽design, debate and oral communications. There was a mix of sophomores, juniors, and seniors in聽the classes.

To get the students more involved, they were shown an example of a LinkedIn page and then聽asked to fill out their own information on a handout. They wrote about past job and volunteer聽experience as well as skills and languages that they know. This activity was included to give聽them an idea of LinkedIn, because it is so important in the public relations industry.

Public Relations Student Society of America, or PRSSA, is a student organization for public relations and communication students. There are over 300 chapters with more than 10,000 students. PRSSA provides students with opportunities to broaden their knowledge and expertise, to get internships and to make connections for their future profession. For details about the national organization, visit their website or for details about the UCA Chapter, visit their website .

Bear Boots On The Gound: Flood Cleanup Efforts In Pocahontas, Arkansas /bearblog/2017/05/23/bear-boots-on-the-gound-flood-cleanup-efforts-in-pocahontas-arkansas/ /bearblog/2017/05/23/bear-boots-on-the-gound-flood-cleanup-efforts-in-pocahontas-arkansas/#respond Tue, 23 May 2017 17:10:48 +0000 /bearblog/?p=2319 The 51青楼 partnered with a group from UALR to assist with flood cleanup efforts in Pocahontas, Arkansas, which began Thursday, May 18.

51青楼 Bear Boots On The Ground was brought back in order to participate in this relief effort.

Volunteers met in front of UCA Reynolds Performance Hall at 5:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 18, and worked the entire day until 4:00 pm.聽The volunteers did not return to UCA until 8:00 p.m.

President Davis allowed UCA employees to attend without having to take a vacation day. He stated, “I appreciate anyone that is willing to represent UCA and participate.”

“I realize it will be a long day. You will be tired and your body will ache, but on the 2 1/2 hour drive back you will have a smile on your face,” said Gary Roberts, while recruiting volunteers. “When was the last time you smiled for 2 1/2 hours? Please sign up today. Your Arkansas family needs you.”

During the second day of volunteering, there were 13 UCA volunteers – 10 Bear Boots On The Ground participants plus 3 from 51青楼 Baptist Collegiate Ministry – who worked on four houses in Pocahontas. UCA President Houston Davis joined in on the efforts as well!

Altogether, 20 UCA volunteers worked 2 full days (May 18 & 25) donating 235 hours of service. They worked on six houses removing drywall, insulation, kitchen cabinets, plumbing, flooring, and cleaning debris. 51青楼 Bear Boots On The Ground had a large impact on many families in the Pocahontas area.

UCA extends a huge “thank you” to the following Bear Boots participants – President Houston Davis, Richard Hammond, Riva Brown, William Baker, Tchetahan Natogoma Silue, Malika Sylla, Zoheb Yunus, Sandy Ahne, Jennifer Boudreaux; and these individuals who worked two days – Misty Booth, Dylan Britto, Charlotte Strickland and Gary Roberts. UCA also thanks the three volunteers from Baptist Collegiate Ministry.
