Her dissertation, “Toward Capabilities-Based Environmental Leadership: A Case Study from Kanembwe, Rwanda,” was a multi-year study that grew out of the Science and Society in Rwanda study-abroad program.

Dr. Horton’s work provides empirical data that contribute to the Capabilities Approach literature and also show measurable improvements to the quality of life of residents of Kanembwe through the introduction of site-built rocket stoves.

UCA Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi Receives Superior Chapter Recognition /bearblog/2016/10/31/uca-chapter-of-beta-alpha-psi-receives-superior-chapter-recognition/ /bearblog/2016/10/31/uca-chapter-of-beta-alpha-psi-receives-superior-chapter-recognition/#respond Mon, 31 Oct 2016 13:47:00 +0000 /bearblog/?p=1598 The Beta Alpha Psi students and the accounting department were recently recognized by the national organization as a Superior Chapter.

2016-17 Beta Alpha Psi president Merle Hopkins stated, “On behalf of the Beta Alpha Psi Board of Directors, I would like to congratulate Professors Connie McKnight, Stephanie Watson and the Theta Lambda Chapter on their successful efforts during the 2015-2016 academic year. We are proud to announce that your chapter has been recognized internationally as a Superior Chapter. Each Superior chapter will receive an award check for $500 sponsored by the KPMG Foundation. Recognition as a Superior Chapter is a significant accomplishment. Under the leadership of Connie McKnight and Stephanie Watson, the Theta Lambda Chapter has far exceeded the baseline requirements of Beta Alpha Psi and has excelled in the areas of academics, professionalism, and leadership. As Faculty Advisors for the chapter, Connie McKnight and Stephanie Watson have provided an invaluable service to your academic institution.”

Chemistry Professor Earns Third Three-Year Award From National Science Foundation /bearblog/2016/09/19/chemistry-professor-earns-third-3-year-award-from-national-science-foundation/ /bearblog/2016/09/19/chemistry-professor-earns-third-3-year-award-from-national-science-foundation/#respond Mon, 19 Sep 2016 00:27:49 +0000 /bearblog/?p=1412 taylorProfessor William Taylor of the department of chemistry recently earned his third three-year award from the National Science Foundation.

The current award ($223,913) “Investigating the Influence of Halogen Ligands on the Ability of Late Gas-Phase Transition Metal Ions to Activate Bonds in Small Substrate Molecules” supports his work from 2016 – 2019.

With this support, Taylor continues his investigations of fundamental reaction dynamics of metal ions with selected molecules. His work will inform the understanding of chemistry relevant to a number of areas – including atmospheric reactions of greenhouse gases and ozone depleting substances, industrial catalytic processes, and the development of novel metal-based materials.

This support also enables Taylor to continue to provide cutting-edge research experiences for many UCA STEM majors who have benefited greatly from his careful mentorship during his 26+ year tenure at UCA.
